Small-Scale Businesses in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan


The location of Mantin which is in between Seremban and Nilai has made its villagers to be more focused on the two towns itself. This is because residents could obtain their daily needs in this two towns. Nonetheless, there are some economic activities in Mantin for them to get their basic necessities.

There are many types of businesses in Mantin. Shop lots can be found lining along the primary roads in this town. The economic activities conducted here are grocery shops, launderette, motorcycle repairing workshop etcetera. Apart from that, there are also villagers like Haji Ibrahim Yaacob who sells fertilizers and pesticides to the farmers and smallholders within the Mantin town area.

History of Mantin, Negeri Sembilan

In the early days, Mantin was well known because of tin mining business by a Chinese towkay (business owner) named Kong Sang. Due to plenty of tin, the Europeans called the place Mine Tin for at this place tin (lombong timah). However, the locals could not pronounce Mine Tin correctly. Instead, they called the place Mantin.

Following the completion of the railway connecting Seremban and Kajang in 1903 which made the export of tin economical, Mantin became a town. The town attracted a large number of Chinese migrants, mainly Hakka, for the tin mining business. Mantin was the center of tin mining business of Negeri Sembilan in the early 20th century.
